Melitta vs. French Press…fight!

in Brewing Coffee

Question: What makes a better cup of coffee: the Melitta manual coffee system (aka Chemex) OR the French Press? — Hal

Answer: Hal, this is a great question. I’m going to go with the French Press for two very non-scientific reasons. First, the experts I know swear by the French Press so I believe that’s in a class of its own. Second, my understanding of any pour-over technique like Melitta’s is that it is onerous and requires a steady pour…the French Press on the other hand is very easy to manage (pour the hot water in, let it sit). I feel like the easier method with less margin for error that experts swear by is our winner.

Let me know if you hear differently. It’s a great question.

  1. If you steep the coffee for 4 minutes in hot water (195-200 deg) before pouring it through a Mellita filter, it will meet or better that made in a French Press and will be easier to clean up.

  2. Great information George. As I mentioned, I’ve never used the Mellita so I’m glad to hear from somebody who has.

  3. I use Melitta everyday. You gently have to wet the grounds and just keep rewetting the. It is an extraction of flavor.

The French Press method is more of an infusion, like tea.

    Try it!

  5. The older coffee press with handles made of glass was elegant and not masculine. I do not always want to wake up with a cup of coffee in front of me looking like it has a piece of male anatomy hanging on the side of it as a handle–all squared and not elegant. Could we have a design using the former glass handle please. I would buy two immediately. Or, do we have the possibility of buying the old design?

  6. Patricia, sometimes you see something and you just can’t shake the image from your head! I’m not familiar with the design you’ve mentioned, so I don’t believe it’s widely available anymore. The classic Bodum design has done the press pot justice.
