The Tough Criteria

We selected seven different rankings for measuring a quality online source for coffee. They are:

* Informative about the coffee they sell
* Tangible shopper experience
* Safety and security for online shopping
* Brand recognition
* Membership benefits
* Variety of coffee
* Customer service

For each ranking, the store was given a numerical score based on being bad, fair, or good. Each store's scores by ranking were tallied to rank them against each other.

The numerical score for being good is disproportionately stronger in overall scoring than being bad or fair. The reason for this approach is that different online coffee stores choose to intentionally focus on different advantages of shopping with them. This requires trade-offs and none of these eleven stores were found to excel in all seven rankings. Of course, an online store that is bad or fair across the board will end up with a low overall score and rank near the bottom of the list.

The highest ranked stores were the ones found to excel in the most of these seven rankings. They encompass as much of everything you should be looking for. Information about the coffee. Some way to overcome the tangible things you lose by shopping online. A safe and secure online shopping experience. A strong and recognized name in the world of coffee. Loyalty benefits for signing up with them to satisfy your ongoing coffee needs. A wide variety of different kinds of coffee. And, peace of mind customer service.

Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado...

1. Peet's Coffee and Tea Report Card Score: 95%

2. Starbucks Store Report Card Score: 93%

3. Boca Java Gourmet Coffee Report Card Score: 82%

And the rest...

4. Ashley Cooper Coffee: 68%
5. Coffee For Less: 62%
6. Mystic Monk Coffee: 41%
7. Coastal Bean: 35%
8. Casteel Coffee: 28%
9. No Name Java: 23%
10. Munn's World Coffee: 14%
11. Precious Provisions: 7%

There are a couple things to keep in mind when using this scoring system to find your online coffee vendor of choice. First of all, these do not represent every online source for coffee, but they do represent eleven of the biggest and most reputable. Second, those that did not score well on our Report Card are not necessarily bad sources and you should consider any of them.

For instance, Precious Provisions deals almost exclusively in Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, a premium and unique specialty coffee. That focus makes them a great source for that particular kind of coffee, but obviously hurt them on our Report Card in offering a Variety of Coffee. They also assume their shopper knows this particular kind of coffee well enough that they do not need to be Informative About Coffee or offer a Tangible Shopper Experience. Their focus involves trading off these kinds of features in exchange for being the only source you should consider for one very particular type of coffee. That focus is at odds with our Report Card so that an otherwise dependable source scores poorly.

As another example, No Name Java offers a great Variety of Coffee and decent Customer Service, but little else that scores well on our Report Card.

The top-ranking first and second sources simply scored best against most of the criteria in the Report Card. Keep that in mind if the seven rankings we used do not necessarily agree with what you look for or need in an online source for good coffee.
